Introducing George Baloghy, Artist...

George Baloghy is an established Australasian artist. His current style can be described as realism, although it is a particular kind of realism, hardened and sharpened to be something more dramatic. By heightening colour and contrast he creates a realism that is not quite like the reality that we see, but a kind of hyper-realism. He deals with a number of different themes, and these threads have intertwined over the years of his production. There are city landscapes, rural and coastal scenes, art historical references and historical scenes reinterpreted. They are more than pictures, they are also commentaries on how we see. As such there is generally more to the pictures than meets the eye, depending on your knowledge of art history and sometimes local events. His work is included in the curricula of University Art History Programmes, and he has work in almost all the major public art collections in New Zealand. George Baloghy has worked professionally as an artist since 1993.

Japanese Perspective

A spoof of Eduard Manet's famous painting. The picture has been modernised with the addition of a Honda car as a means of conveyance. There is also reference to Manet's use of Japanese perspective (fashionable in the 1880s in Paris) which is an artificial perspective that seems to crawl unnaturally up the picture surface (note the bathing figure in the background seems too high up). The presence of the Honda implies the modern japanese perspective.
